Holmes a Court feeling heat at Rabbitohs
February 8, 2007 - 5:19PM
South Sydney boss Peter Holmes a Court admits the pressure is getting to him as the countdown begins for the Rabbitohs to turn the off-field hype into on-field success.
Souths will begin the 2007 NRL season next month with unprecedented expectations for a wooden-spooner following Holmes a Court and Hollywood star Russell Crowe's takeover of the club last
year.
Since then, the new owners have signed five high profile stars, given boxer Anthony Mundine a gig in the local Aboriginal community, lured former Australian cricket physio Errol Alcott to the club and reeled in the sponsorship
dollars.
"Am I feeling the pressure? Yeah, I think I am," Holmes a Court said at the announcement of the club's latest off-field coup, a seven-figure deal with airline Virgin Blue.
"Absolutely we're feeling the pressure but it's a positive sort of
pressure, it's a positive energy, everyone's got a spring in their step, everyone's working really hard."
It's the players and new coach Jason Taylor who will find themselves under the pump when the Rabbitohs kick off their season on March 19 against a Roosters side who also have a point to prove after a woeful 2006.
"That's for them (the players) to manage expectations, that's for them to respond
appropriately," Holmes a Court said.
"There's always pressure on you when you're in professional sport and
I'm sure that they're grown up enough to handle it.
"They know what their job is. Their job is to play great football."
Asked if he was prepared to wear another wooden spoon, the executive chairman
said: "I'd never thought about that prospect before."
There were few signs of pressure from Crowe, who bounced into the press conference in a blue suit and headed straight to the back of the room to greet players Roy
Asotasi, Nathan Merritt and Scott Geddes - in front of a mass of
photographers.
He disappeared soon after without speaking to the media.
High profile signing Asotasi said the players were aiming to be competitive by round one through trials against Cronulla and St George
Illawarra.
"The club's moving places off the field but our main concern at the moment as players is to hopefully get things moving real quick when the NRL season comes
around," Asotasi said.
"We're concentrating on the trials at the moment and seeing what combinations work and what
don't and we definitely want to be ready by round one and we just want to be competitive.
"JT's (Taylor's) really trying to get us to the structure that he wants us to play.
"That's the main reason why we're trying to concentrate on the trials and hopefully get things right and be ready by round one."
Back off the field, Holmes a Court said success in 2007 would be measured by one
thing.
"It's crowd numbers," he said.
"We've got to get crowd numbers, we've got to get membership, we've got to get sales up in every part of our
organisation." (Grazie Ivani!)
