- from smh.com.au:
Crowe plays coach at Rabbitohs
July 18, 2006
South Sydney co-owner Russell Crowe has taken a hands-on approach at the Rabbitohs, running his own bike riding and ten-pin bowling sessions with the
players.
Crowe got to play coach at Centennial Park and the Fox Studios Entertainment Quarter, giving the struggling Rabbitohs a break from the usual routine.
And the Hollywood star's coaching style could be described as leaning towards the "fatherly" as Crowe warned the players not to leave their bike helmets behind.
"Don't leave your helmets, they won't be there when you come back," he told them.
He also joked with an AAP photographer for not arriving early enough for the more gruelling part of the morning, the bike ride.
"Where were you when it was raining this morning, on the couch with your feet up?" he laughed.
Souths captain Peter Cusack said the Rabbitohs had been expecting a tougher morning hit-out but the wet weather had caused the change of plan.
"It was good, everyone together, I think the big thing was just doing something as a team, as a unit," Cusack said.
"It was still training, still getting something out of it with the bike ride."
It was the first session Crowe has led since officially taking over the club with businessman Peter Holmes a Court on June 8.
Between the ride and the bowling, at the Entertainment Quarters Strike bowling alley, Crowe gave the team a pep talk.
"He just spoke about what we were doing, where we were going, there was no real motivational talk or nothing like that," Cusack
said.
"I think what he expects is that we win as many games as we can and have a good platform to build from for next year."
Rabbitohs head coach Shaun McRae said the session was used as "something a bit different" to "freshen people up" and "maintain the spirit in the camp".
"It's not unusual this ... I'd say probably clubs do things once a month that are a little bit different," McRae
said.
"I think it's just tremendous that they're (Crowe and Holmes a Court) available pretty much all the time to show an interest in everything that goes
on." |

Australia, Russell Crowe acquista club 19.03.06
''Ora possiamo iniziare a giocare in maniera competitiva.

Coffs Coast Advocate: No fear Russell’s here at the Coffs
13.01.2006
By JENI FAULKNER
ONLY in a Coffs Harbour beer garden could you pull up a stool and chat with an Oscar winner.
Sporting casual shorts, a Cinderella Man vest, and three-day growth Russell Crowe met with the Coffs Coast Advocate yesterday to talk about life as a celebrity and touring with his band, The Ordinary Fear of God.
This weekend Russell officially opens the new-look Coffs Hotel and he said it was refreshing to visit his favourite watering hole.
"Being a family man is fantastic, I have such an amazing little kid," Russell laughed.
"But since I’ve been married I hardly have any time to get up here because now our lives are geared around Sydney.
Russell calls his visits to the family’s Nana Glen property ‘little snatches’ in his busy schedule, and he argues that it takes at least a month before he can relax back into life on the North Coast.
"Movies are my day job so it’s nice when I get to come up here and tour with my band, even if it’s only a quick
visit."
Russell arrived at the Coffs Hotel on Wednesday night for his first look at the renovations following last July’s fire. He was impressed but said it was now harder for an ‘old bloke’ like himself to find somewhere to hide.
"When I walked in I was thinking I bet Marty is only just plugging in the power," he joked.
"But I was impressed by the development, it is going to be a great weekend."
Russell and his band will belt out tunes tonight and tomorrow in the back bar of the hotel, but Russell’s visit is just another blip in his busy schedule.
Directly after the last performance Russell will retreat from the crowds to jump in his private jet and head back to Sydney.
From there he will fly to the US for the Golden Globes where he has been nominated for Best Actor for his performance in the film Cinderella Man.
"I am not expecting anything from the Golden Globes, but it is nice to be nominated," Russell said.
"There was a lot of problems with the way that film was released, but it is a brilliant movie and I can’t believe it didn’t get better
audiences."
At this point in his career Russell says Cinderella Man is his favourite movie, although he’s not looking forward to being ‘tired as hell’ next
week.
The band’s tour finishes at the end of January. They will also perform at Parliament House in Canberra as part of the Australia Day festivities. Russell then dusts off his boots for the 34th Country Music Awards in Tamworth on January 28.
Tickets to see Russell and The Ordinary Fear of God at the Coffs Hotel, either tonight or tomorrow, are still available. CDs will also be for sale.
And, just like the band frontman he is, Russell added that some retro-style older band T-shirts would even be for sale, just for a bit of fun. |
